These 9 Cars Have the Worst Exhaust Systems—Is Yours on the List?

Some cars failed to meet expectations when it came to their exhaust systems over the years. When you purchase a performance car, you want something that sounds amazing, but these nine vehicles fell short of what people thought they’d sound like. Let us know if your car is on the list.

1. Lamborghini Miura

Lamborghini is known for luxury and power. The Miura was released in the 1960s and its exhaust system was anything but impressive. Although the engine is powerful and the car’s exhaust note is iconic, the system is notorious for being prone to leaks and failure over time. The Miura’s exhaust pipes have a tendency to rust, which diminishes performance and could lead to expensive repairs. Additionally, the Miura’s exhaust isn’t as efficient as modern systems, making it less environmentally friendly and less fuel-efficient.

2. BMW i8

The BMW i8 is a hybrid supercar that combines futuristic design with eco-conscious technology. While the car itself is a marvel, its exhaust system leaves much to be desired, especially considering its high price tag. The i8’s exhaust is loud, aggressive, and not exactly refined, which is surprising for a luxury car. On top of that, the system is also known to create excessive drone, which can make long-distance driving unpleasant.

3. Cadillac ATS-V

Cadillac has made some great cars over the years, but the ATS-V missed the mark, especially where the exhaust was concerned. The exhaust is excessively noisy and doesn’t provide the polished sound you might expect from a premium sports car. The system is also prone to degradation, which leads to expensive repairs down the road. Additionally, the exhaust does little to enhance the engine’s performance, making it less effective in improving fuel economy.

4. Infiniti Q50s Red Sport 400

The Infiniti Q50s Red Sport 400 offers an incredible amount of horsepower, but the exhaust system doesn’t match its performance capabilities. Known for being overly loud, the exhaust roars through the cabin, which can be grating for drivers and passengers alike. While it certainly grabs attention, the harsh noise can become unbearable on longer drives. The exhaust system is also prone to rust and corrosion, which means owners may have to replace parts sooner than expected.

5. Ford GT

Ford’s GT is known for being overly loud for really no reason. When compared to other performance cars, it doesn’t blow anything out of the water really.  The Ford GT’s exhaust isn’t particularly effective at enhancing engine efficiency or improving fuel economy. Additionally, it can cause discomfort on longer drives, as the noise is intrusive and constant.

6. Honda Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R is a fan-favorite for those who love performance at an affordable price, but its exhaust system is often considered its weak link. The exhaust is extremely loud and not as refined as other cars in the same category. This can lead to an uncomfortable driving experience, especially for those who prefer a quieter ride. Despite its power, the exhaust system doesn’t contribute much to engine efficiency or performance.

7. Mercedes-AMG G65

You won’t see me typically bad-mouthing Mercedes. I love the brand and I love most of their cars, but what was the company thinking with the exhaust system on the AMG G65?? It has been widely criticized for being overly loud for no reason. On top of that, the G65’s exhaust doesn’t contribute much to the smooth, quiet luxury driving experience that the brand is known for. Instead, it creates a constant, aggressive sound that can be overwhelming, especially during highway driving.

8. Nissan GT-R

Many people see the GT-R as automotive royalty due to its status in Hollywood, but the exhaust system isn’t as refined as you’d expect. While the car is known for its distinctive engine roar, the exhaust system is often criticized for being too loud and unbalanced. The harsh noise it produces can detract from the thrill of driving, especially at higher speeds. Additionally, the exhaust isn’t as effective at boosting engine performance or fuel efficiency as it could be.

9. Subaru WRX

The Subaru WRX is known for its rally-inspired performance and handling, but its exhaust system is often criticized for being too loud and harsh. The excessive noise can be overwhelming for drivers who prefer a more subdued driving experience. The exhaust is also known to lack refinement, creating a droning sound that can be annoying on longer drives. While the WRX’s exhaust system isn’t terrible, it doesn’t match the performance and handling capabilities of the car itself.

Time for an Upgrade?

Luckily, the exhaust system on your car is something that is fairly easy to upgrade. Each of these cars offers great performance, but you might be disappointed when you get behind the wheel and hear the offputting sound of the exhaust. No matter what your reasoning is (comfort, efficiency, or a more balanced exhaust note), upgrades are available and it can help improve your overall driving experience.
