- Audi Q7: I’ll be honest, I love Audi, and you really couldn’t do better than the Audi Q7 if you’re looking for a luxury SUV. When buying new, it is also quite a bit cheaper than the newest Land Rover Range Rover. 2025 Range Rovers start at over $110K MSRP, while the latest Q7 starts at $60,500. And you’ll have fewer breakdowns and way fewer headaches.
- Porsche Macan (or the Cayenne): Porsche is another great luxury carmaker. The Macan starts at $62,900, while the Cayenne starts around $84,700. Both models are heads-and-tails better than anything being put out by Land Rover and, as long as you keep up with maintenance, they’ll last you a while without many major problems.
- Volvo XC60: Volvo is one of the most reliable car brands around, and if you are in the market for a luxury SUV, you can’t go wrong with the XC60. Best of all, it’s much less pricey than other vehicles in this class. You can get a brand-new XC60 starting at $47,050.
- Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class: You can’t go wrong with Mercedes if what you are looking for is luxury. The GLE-Class will meet your needs and, once again, as long as you keep up with maintenance, your Mercedes-Benz typically will treat you well. Prices for these start at $61,850.
- Lexus LX: If you want the reliability of Toyota but also want a luxury ride, Lexus is the way to go. The LX is another direct competitor of Land Rover, but it won’t leave you on the side of the road. It’s a little pricier (starting at $106,000), but it’ll pay off in reliability and durability. Many mechanics consistently highlight Lexus SUVs as the gold standard for reliability and comfort.
The Harsh Reality of “Luxury” Ownership
Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles may turn heads, but under the hood, they often turn stomachs. The combination of poor reliability, high maintenance costs, and constant electronic failures makes them a risky choice. Mechanics agree that few brands promise so much yet deliver so little long-term satisfaction. For most owners, the dream of owning a luxury SUV quickly becomes a lesson in patience and expense. If reliability matters, you’re better off choosing a vehicle that impresses your wallet as much as your neighbors.
