Although I’ve been out of the automotive industry (repair shops, anyway) for about five years, there are a number of things I’ve heard people say that just aren’t true. Many folks rely on outdated advice or something their dad always told them. But as technology in your vehicle evolves, so should the way you care for it. That said, there are a lot of damaging myths still circulating out there. These misconceptions aren’t just quirky things dad always said, “so I just follow it.” In some cases, they can really lead to costly repairs. So, here’s a look at seven myths experts agree that drivers need to stop believing.

1. Premium Gas Always Improves Performance

Many drivers assume that premium fuel automatically makes their car run better. In reality, unless your vehicle specifically requires premium, it offers no performance boost. Modern engines are designed to run efficiently on regular unleaded fuel, and using premium unnecessarily only drains your wallet. Some people even risk damaging their car by ignoring manufacturer recommendations.

2. You Don’t Need to Change Oil as Often Anymore

With synthetic oils and advanced engines, many drivers believe oil changes are practically optional. While intervals have lengthened, skipping oil changes altogether is a recipe for disaster. Dirty oil leads to poor lubrication, overheating, and eventual engine failure. Following your manufacturer’s schedule is still critical, even if it’s less frequent than in the past. Ignoring this advice is another dangerous car myth that can shorten your car’s lifespan.

3. Red Cars Get Pulled Over More Often

This myth has been around for decades, but experts say color doesn’t determine ticket frequency. Police officers base stops on behavior (speeding, reckless driving, or violations), not paint jobs. Insurance companies also don’t charge more for red cars compared to other colors. Believing this myth may cause drivers to make poor purchasing decisions based on fear.

4. Warming Up Your Car for 10 Minutes Is Necessary

Older carbureted engines needed time to warm up, but modern fuel-injected cars don’t. Idling for long periods wastes fuel, increases emissions, and can even harm your engine. Experts recommend driving gently for the first few minutes instead of letting the car sit. This practice warms the engine more efficiently and keeps components in better condition.

5. Hands-Free Devices Eliminate Distracted Driving

Many drivers believe that using Bluetooth or hands-free systems makes them completely safe. Studies show that mental distraction is just as dangerous as holding a phone. Even if your hands are on the wheel, your focus may still be elsewhere. Reaction times slow, and situational awareness drops significantly. This is one of the most overlooked dangerous car myths that continues to put drivers at risk.

6. Bigger Vehicles Are Always Safer

It’s easy to assume that SUVs and trucks guarantee safety simply because of their size. While larger vehicles may fare better in collisions, they also have higher rollover risks. Their weight can make stopping distances longer, and blind spots are often larger. Safety depends more on design, technology, and driver behavior than sheer size. Believing otherwise is another dangerous car myth that can lead to overconfidence behind the wheel.

7. You Can Rely on Tires Until They’re Bald

Some drivers think tires are fine until tread completely disappears. In truth, worn tires lose grip long before they’re bald, especially in wet conditions. Hydroplaning, longer stopping distances, and poor handling all become serious risks. Experts recommend replacing tires once tread depth reaches unsafe levels, not when they’re visibly smooth.

Driving Smarter Means Ditching the Myths

Car technology has changed, but myths have a way of sticking around. Believing outdated advice can leave you vulnerable to accidents, breakdowns, and unnecessary expenses. By listening to experts and following manufacturer guidelines, you’ll drive smarter and safer every day. The truth is clear: safety and performance come from facts, not folklore. Busting these dangerous car myths is the first step toward becoming a more responsible driver.
