We’ve all said things we didn’t mean or used filler phrases to soften a point. But some expressions do more harm than good, especially when they subtly chip away at how others perceive your intelligence. Whether you’re in a job interview, a heated debate, or just chatting with friends, the words you choose matter. Certain phrases can make you sound unsure, uninformed, or even dismissive without you realizing it. Here are six common phrases that quietly sabotage your credibility (and what you can say that will boost your image).

1. “I’m not an expert, but…”

This phrase might seem humble, but it instantly undercuts your authority. Even if you have valuable insight, prefacing it with this disclaimer tells others not to take you seriously. It’s a verbal shrug that invites doubt before you’ve even made your point. Instead, lead with your perspective confidently and let your knowledge speak for itself. If you truly need to acknowledge your limits, try, “Based on what I’ve learned…” It’s honest without being self-defeating.

2. “This might be a stupid question…”

There’s no such thing as a stupid question, only missed opportunities to learn. But when you label your own curiosity as “stupid,” you’re signaling insecurity and inviting others to dismiss your input. It also makes others uncomfortable, as they may feel pressured to reassure you. A better approach is to ask your question directly and with curiosity. Confidence in seeking clarity shows intelligence, not the lack of it.

3. “I just think…”

The word “just” is a sneaky little qualifier that minimizes your opinion. Saying “I just think” makes your statement sound like an afterthought or something not worth much weight. It’s especially common among people trying to avoid confrontation or seem overly assertive. But in doing so, you may come across as unsure or lacking conviction. Try dropping the “just” and stating your thoughts plainly. It’s a small tweak with a big impact.

4. “Does that make sense?”

While it’s important to ensure clarity, this phrase can unintentionally suggest that you doubt your own ability to explain something. It can also imply that the listener might not be smart enough to follow along, which can feel condescending. A more empowering alternative is, “Let me know if you’d like me to clarify anything.” This keeps the door open for questions without undermining your message or the listener’s intelligence. It’s all about striking the right balance between confidence and approachability.

5. “I could be wrong, but…”

Much like “I’m not an expert,” this phrase is a preemptive apology that weakens your stance. It tells people you don’t fully believe in what you’re saying, even if you’re right. While it’s wise to stay open to correction, constantly hedging your statements can make you seem unsure or untrustworthy. If you’re offering an opinion, own it. Then you can invite discussion. Try saying, “Here’s how I see it,” or “From my perspective…” to sound thoughtful without sounding uncertain.

6. “Whatever.”

This one’s a conversation killer. “Whatever” signals disinterest, frustration, or even contempt, and it shuts down meaningful dialogue. It’s often used to avoid conflict, but it can come across as dismissive or immature. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or disagree but don’t want to argue, say so directly. Phrases like “Let’s revisit this later” or “I need a moment to think about that” show emotional intelligence and keep the conversation respectful.

Speak Smarter, Sound Smarter

The way we speak shapes how others see us and how we see ourselves. These six phrases may seem harmless, but over time, they can erode your credibility and confidence. By becoming more aware of your language, you can replace self-sabotaging habits with stronger, smarter communication. It’s not about sounding like a know-it-all; it’s about owning your voice and expressing yourself with clarity and confidence. After all, intelligence isn’t just what you know. It’s how you share it.
